Dance Your Way to a Sharper Mind: Local Club Offers Free Classes

Research shows dancing can reduce dementia risk by up to 76% – and Hassocks-based Jive Frenzy is making it easy for everyone to get started

Jive Frenzy, a community dance club bringing Modern Jive and West Coast Swing to the Hassocks and Bolney area, is inviting local residents to discover the joy of partner dancing with their first lesson completely free to anyone that has never danced before.

The invitation comes at a time when a growing body of scientific research highlights dance as one of the most powerful activities for protecting brain health and reducing the risk of dementia.

Dancing: The Brain’s Best Exercise

A landmark study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that people who danced frequently had a 76% lower risk of developing dementia, making dancing the only physical activity in the study to offer significant protection against cognitive decline. Researchers believe it is the unique combination of physical movement, music, memory recall, social interaction, and split-second decision-making that gives dance its extraordinary brain-boosting power.

Further research from the journal Frontiers in Sports and Active Living (2025) confirms that dance interventions improve cognitive performance, alleviate symptoms of depression, and even reduce tau protein levels – a biological marker associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Meanwhile, a 2024 global scoping review found that just one to two hours of dancing per week can measurably improve cognitive skills in older adults.

A Full-Body Workout That Doesn’t Feel Like One

Beyond brain health, the physical benefits of regular dancing are extensive. Peer-reviewed studies show that social dancing can:

  • Improve cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and endurance
  • Enhance balance, coordination, and agility, significantly reducing the risk of falls
  • Boost flexibility, posture, and reaction times
  • Lower resting heart rate and reduced cardiovascular health risks
  • Combat loneliness, social isolation, and symptoms of depression
  • Increase confidence and overall sense of well-being

Crucially, research confirms that dance is a safe and accessible activity for people of all ages, making it one of the most effective and enjoyable ways to stay healthy in later life.

Open to Community Partnerships

Jive Frenzy is also reaching out to local businesses, community groups, and organisations. The club is available to deliver bespoke team-building dance workshops at workplaces and venues across the area, a fun, energising alternative to the usual away-day activities that also delivers genuine health and wellbeing benefits for staff.

The club is keen to collaborate with community organisations to share the opportunity more widely, whether through flyers, posters, or joint events.

Dancing is so much more than just a fun night out. The science is clear that it’s one of the best things you can do for your body and your brain. We want to make it as easy as possible for people in our community to experience those benefits for themselves.
