Frequently ASKED Questions
Whether you are taking your very first steps onto the dance floor or you have been spinning, gliding and anchoring for years, questions are part of every dancer’s journey. Our FAQs are here to give you clear, friendly answers about Modern Jive and West Coast Swing, from what to expect in your first class to how our sessions support experienced dancers looking to refine their style. Think of this as your calm before the music starts, everything you need to feel relaxed, confident and ready to dance.
Do I need a partner?
No, you do not need to bring a partner. Many dancers attend on their own and rotate partners throughout the evening. It is a friendly, social environment and everyone is encouraged to mix and dance with different people.
I’m a complete beginner - will I be in the way?
Not at all. Beginners are welcome and we teach in a way that helps you feel confident quickly.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes you can move in, and shoes that won’t stick to the floor. Bring water.
Is it only for younger people?
No. Our community spans ages and backgrounds—if you want a friendly night out and a new skill, you’ll fit in.
What’s the difference between Modern Jive and West Coast Swing?
Modern Jive is super accessible and social. West Coast Swing is smoother and more musical, with a strong focus on connection and interpretation.
Can I just come and watch?
Yes – if you’re nervous, come a little early and say hello.
What should I wear to a Jive Frenzy Freestyle?
Wear something comfortable that allows you to move freely. Smart casual works perfectly. For footwear, choose smooth soled shoes that allow you to turn easily. Avoid very grippy trainers or high heels that feel unstable. Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel confident.
I am a beginner. Can I still attend a Freestyle?
Yes. Freestyles are a great way to practise what you have learned in class. If you are very new, we recommend attending a few lessons first so you feel comfortable with the basics.
What is the difference between Jive and Hybrid nights?
Jive Freestyles focus on Modern Jive music and style. Hybrid nights blend Modern Jive with West Coast Swing, giving you a mix of tempos and techniques throughout the evening.
What music will be played?
Expect a wide range of music from chart hits and classics to bluesy tracks and smooth contemporary sounds. Hybrid nights include music suitable for both Modern Jive and West Coast Swing.
How long does a Freestyle evening last?
Most of our Freestyle events run for several hours, giving you plenty of time to dance, socialise and take breaks when needed. Check the individual event listing for exact timings.
Is there a dress code?
There is no strict dress code. Smart casual is ideal. Some dancers like to dress up slightly for special events, but comfort and ease of movement are always the priority.
Can I sit out if I need a break?
Absolutely. There is no pressure to dance every song. Take breaks, grab a drink and enjoy the atmosphere whenever you like.
Are workshops suitable for all levels?
We offer workshops for different levels. The event description will clearly state whether it is beginner friendly, improver or more advanced so you can choose what suits you.
How do I book and pay?
You can book directly through our website event listings. Some events also allow payment on the door, but we recommend booking in advance to secure your place.
